What role, if any, should philosophy play in the creation of art?

Philosophers of art are not art critics. While the critic arguably aims at enhancing our appreciation of particular works of art, the philosopher attempts to reveal and question the conceptual foundations the critics employ in their evaluations. But the popularity of recent philosophy trends which discourage attention to the ‘making process’ may have isolated the philosopher of art. While artists continue to produce compelling, thought-provoking, engaging and transporting works, what role, if any, does philosophy of art have to play in the creation of art?

Panellists
Dr. Sacha Golob – Director of the Centre for Philosophy and Visual Arts, King’s College London
Lina Viktor – Conceptual Artist
Gretchen Andrews – Visual Artist
Vanessa Brassey – Commercial Production & Philosophy, King’s College London
