Just a Game? The Aesthetics and Ethics of Video Games

24th – 25th June 2016, University of Kent, Canterbury

Video games have become one of the most popular forms of entertainment today. Many of them possess a wide array of artistic and aesthetic qualities and there is growing consensus now that they constitute an emerging new art form. At the same time, video games have raised important ethical questions and the debate on their moral status and impact has now gone well beyond the traditional academic context and community.

This international conference, organised by the Aesthetics Research Centre, will seek to explore relevant connections between the ethics and aesthetics of video games, thereby also drawing on insights from the philosophy of mind, philosophy of information, and feminist philosophy.

Confirmed speakers are:
❖ Aaron Meskin, University of Leeds
❖ Mari Mikkola, Humboldt University
❖ Shelby Moser, University of Kent
❖ Jonathan Robson, University of Nottingham
❖ Katherine Thomson-Jones, Oberlin College
❖ Kendall Walton, University of Michigan

Submissions can be on any topic related to the aesthetics and ethics of video games. We encourage contributions from graduates, early career researchers, and underrepresented groups and are proud supporters of the BPA/SWIP Good Practice Scheme.

Please send a short abstract of 300-500 words for a 20-minute presentation to justagameukc@gmail.com by 15th March 2016. Please include your name, the title of your paper, institutional affiliation, graduate level, and email address.

This conference is funded by the British Society of Aesthetics and the Aesthetics Research Centre. We are unfortunately unable to cover travel expenses for participants, but we hope this will not prove too much of a discouragement.
