We are pleased to invite proposals for presentations on the relation between aesthetics and cognition.

What is the relationship between discursive knowledge and aesthetic judgment or experience? Do aesthetic judgments or experiences contribute to knowledge? Do aesthetic experiences involve special forms of cognition or mental states contributing to cognition? Do different fields of art invite distinct kinds of cognitions? Does the cognitive content of artworks contribute to their aesthetic value? Does the emphasis on the cognitive value of aesthetics pose a threat to the autonomy of art and the aesthetic? Does aesthetic judgment reveal the limitations of conceptual thought? Does it call for a re-evaluation of the very notion of cognition?

These and other questions related to the cognitive value of aesthetics will be discussed in the conference, organized by the project The Cognitive Relevance of Aesthetics (CRA), funded by the Finnish Cultural Foundation and hosted by the Discipline of Philosophy at the University of Tampere.

Abstracts of ca. 500 words in Word format should be sent by 18 April 2017 to aestheticsandcognition@gmail.com. Submissions should include the author’s name, affiliation, contact information, and the title of the paper. Accepted papers will receive 45 minutes each (35 minutes for presentation and 10 minutes for discussion). Notifications will be sent in early May.
